These “Shrines” continue a tradition I started as a child, when I made my older brothers trophies to commemorate dubious distinctions (e.g. locking keys inside the car or wrecking a bike).

I’m fascinated by all sorts of shrines, from Thai spirit houses to the Paris catacombs.  Some have suggested that almost all my work – including my ArtCars – could be classified as shrines.

My sculptural versions pay homage to historical styles, but question the subject’s glory.

The point of view is more in line with the court jester speaking oblique truth to power, then an offering from the faithful.

Will these shrines be placed on a pedestal?  Or should they be banished for exalting fallen causes, like the monumental propaganda of the Soviet Union?
