Collage
Collage is fundamental. So many artists, not just mixed-media types, engage in this medium to work out compositions and stretch aesthetic muscles.
And it’s so much fun!
Like most of my work, I don’t start with a theme or design, but with the appropriated imagery at hand. Sometimes I’ll pair content based on its subject matter, but mostly it’s all about what fits – size, form, color – and intuition.
Once the piece looks resolved, I do what I often do to constructions in the studio – slather it in resin. Sometimes the pictures bleed together in surprising ways, intensifying the magic awaiting me the next morning.
These large double sided collages started in Kansas City. I was inspired by the vibrant art scene here, and all the amazing local artists who work in this medium. I opened long dormant troves of imagery, posters & comics from the past 40 years, and lost track of time.
Many are sent to around the nation, gifted as Mail Art.
Half a dozen of these collages were exhibited at the Kansas City Art Institute “Flat File” exhibition
